See the holiday decorations created by the Youngstown Garden Club at Old Fort Niagara, 4 Scott Avenue, Youngstown.  (The fort is closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.) Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for children 6 to 12 years old and free for children under 6.

Thousands of poinsettias will make spectacular displays at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Avenue, Buffalo. Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors & students, $5 for children ages 3-12, and free for Botanical Gardens members and children under age 3.

The Western New York Garden Railway Society will present this exhibit at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Avenue, Buffalo. There will be two train exhibits: Thomas the Train and a traditional set-up will be a part of the family fun. The exhibit is included in admission.

Castle by Candlelight at Old Fort Niagara

7 to 8:30 p.m

The Youngstown Garden Club created holiday decorations for Old Fort Niagara, and you can see them by candlelight during the fort’s annual Castle by Candlelight program. Historic characters will regale visitors with tales of Christmas from the 18th and 19th centuries. Demonstrations of 18th and early 19th century trades and period music will be performed. In the Castle’s Boulangerie (bakery), cooks will demonstrate the preparation of a traditional holiday feast, including wild game. The highlight of the evening will be a grand feu de joie (firing of joy), a traditional military ceremony involving running fire by muskets and artillery to mark a special occasion or victory. That will take place at 8:30 p.m. Tickets to the Castle by Candlelight are $8 per person, and will be available at the door. Guests can arrive at the Fort Niagara Visitor Center, 4 Scott Avenue, Youngstown, at any time between 7 and 8:30 p.m. and are asked to dress for the weather, wear walking footwear, and bring a flashlight. Additional admissions stations will speed your entry this year.

Exhibit in the Arcangel Gallery at Botanical Gardens: Autistic Services

“Selected Works, Past and Present“  will be the exhibit presented by Autistic Services in the Arcangel Gallery in the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Avenue, Buffalo. The show is included with admission. The Arts Work Program at Autistic Services celebrates its 10th anniversary. Its  mission is to give people with autism the opportunity to become involved in the visual and performing arts. Communication is one of the main challenges participants face; visual art provides them with an alternative means of expression. Since the program began, Autistic Services has mounted more than 50 art exhibitions throughout Western New York and its artists have reached milestones such as solo exhibitions, community recognition, and awards.

To earn the certificate, you must attend all six classes, but individual classes may be taken.  It will be taught by David Clark, horticulturist, who has a wealth of knowledge and is able to convey his subject with infectious enthusiasm.  The cost for the series is $105 for Botanical Gardens members and $130 for nonmembers. Niagara Frontier Botanical Society: Talk on use of fire as conservation tool

 7:30 p.m.
Capt. Daniel Richter, New York State Regional Forest Ranger, will discuss “The Use of Fire in WNY as a Conservation and Restoration Tool” at the meeting of the Niagara Frontier Botanical Society in the Harlem Road Community Center, 4225 Harlem Road, one block south of Main Street in Snyder. Capt. Richter has participated in controlled burns at Rush-Oak Openings preserve near Rochester. The meeting is open to the public and free of charge.

Spuria irises, new to Western New York, to be discussed at annual meeting

Spuria irises will be the topic of a presentation when the Western New York Iris Society hosts the annual meeting of the affiliated clubs of the American Iris Society Region 2. Exhibit in the Arcangel Gallery at Botanical Gardens: Autistic Services

“Selected Works, Past and Present“  will be the exhibit presented by Autistic Services in the Arcangel Gallery in the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Avenue, Buffalo. The show is included with admission. The Arts Work Program at Autistic Services celebrates its 10th anniversary. Its  mission is to give people with autism the opportunity to become involved in the visual and performing arts. Communication is one of the main challenges participants face; visual art provides them with an alternative means of expression. Since the program began, Autistic Services has mounted more than 50 art exhibitions throughout Western New York and its artists have reached milestones such as solo exhibitions, community recognition, and awards.

Medicinal Garden Feature: Breast Cancer Awareness & Flu Prevention Month

Breast Cancer Awareness & Flu Prevention Month will be the topics of the Medicinal Garden feature at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Avenue, Buffalo. The show is included with admission. Activities include educational displays about the possible role of botanicals in preventing the seasonal flu, and also the use of plants in treating and researching cancer. Western New York affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure will be on hand to answer questions and provide informational materials.  Rite Aid Pharmacists will also be available to give flu shots to attendees 18 or older. Please bring your health insurance card and your driver’s license.  Shot supplies are limited and will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Sunday In The Cemetery Tours

Learn about the landscape and other features of Forest Lawn in tours of the cemetery at 1411 Delaware Ave., Buffalo. A trained volunteer docent will talk about its history, art, architecture, landscape and, of course, many of Forest Lawn’s famous residents – some of whom guests will get to meet along the way! All tours take approximately two hours. Guests can choose to ride in climate-controlled comfort on the Forest Lawn trolley at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. (cost is $25) or they can walk through Forest Lawn’s beautiful grounds on the walking tours at noon and 2 p.m. ($15).  Sensible walking shoes are strongly recommended for the walking tours. Succulent Show at Botanical Gardens

A visitor favorite, the annual Succulent Show will be held at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Avenue, Buffalo. This show will feature many different types of cacti and succulents displayed in unique ways.  Some will be common landscape succulents used in rock gardens such as sedums and sempervivums (hens and chicks).  The staff will also showcase many unusual plants such as the Split-Rock plant native to Africa.  There will be many different types of succulents such as echeverias, aeoniums and euphorbias on display.  New designs this year will include some whimsical surprises! Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors (55+) & students (13+ with ID), $5 for children ages 3-12 and free for members and children under 3. Glenn Kroetsch will exhibit his art in a show called “Visual Parables” in the Arcangel Gallery in the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Avenue, Buffalo. Kroetsch writes: “The subject matter for my paintings & colorized digital photos comes from my love of scripture & nature.  I make frequent retreats to the Botanical Gardens & other WNY nature sites to find endless inspiration.  I create abstractions from plant forms, with the integration of light, color and texture to express my spiritual journey.”

Fall Festival featuring the Agricultural Fair at Genesee Country Village and Museum

10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A fall festival will be held at the Genesee Country Village and Museum, 1410 Flint Hill Road, Mumford. It’s an authentic, 19th-century country fair with something for everyone. There are exhibitions in more than 150 categories of judged baked goods, preserves, hand-made needlecrafts and the industrial arts—including tin, iron and wooden wares; pottery; cooperage (barrel making); printing,  and broom and soap making. Youth compete in 60 different aged categories, from penmanship and pottery to photography and pumpkin pie. The popular produce tent features specialty vendors offering cheeses, baked goods, maple products, spices, honey, cider, fresh vegetables and other specialty items.

Deadline to enter contests at Genesee Country Village and Museum

You can enter your heirloom vegetables, cut and dried flowers, herbs and more in the annual exhibition and fair to be held at the Genesee Country Village and Museum, 1410 Flint Hill Road, Mumford. The deadline for entries is Friday, September 14. Anyone can enter. Entrants will receive a one-day free admission to the fall fair. Many of the categories include a 19th-Century as well as a 21st-Century section. In addition to plants and flowers, categories include cooking, preserves, needlework, baskets and  photography. Summer workshop at Linwood Gardens: Plein Air Landscape Painting in Oil

Let the rich colors of early fall inspire you during this workshop at Linwood Gardens, 1912 York Road, Pavilion, NY 14525. In this weekend workshop you will focus on capturing the essence of the landscape through direct painting outdoors.  You will learn how to select a subject, develop a composition, and apply a basic oil technique to complete a painting in a short amount of time. Saturday morning will begin with a painting demonstration, which will cover paint application, color mixing and a discussion of atmospheric perspective. You can expect plenty of painting time, individual guidance and a group critique to support your learning.  This is a great plein air painting introduction or refresher.  Some experience with oils is helpful. A materials list will be sent upon registration. The cost is $140. The registration deadline is Friday, August 31.

Summer workshop at Linwood Gardens: Bas-relief Sculpture

10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A two-day workshop called “Bas-relief Sculpture: Nature Imagery and Moldmaking” will be held at Linwood Gardens, 1912 York Road, Pavilion, NY 14525. It is designed to give participants a comprehensive hands-on experience in the process of bas-relief sculpting. You will spend the first day sculpting images based on the observation of nature, chosen ahead of time by the participant. Participants will be provided with an 8 x 10-inch slab of clay and will be assisted in creating a bas-relief of their chosen image. On the second day you will mold the clay image in alginate and then cast a reproduction of the sculpture in plaster. To finish the project, different options for putting a patina on the plaster bas-reliefs will be shown. Materials will be provided. The cost is $140. The registration deadline is Monday, August 6.

Hunters Creek splash hike

The Western New York Land Conservancy is hosting a Hunters Creek splash hike at the Kenneglenn Nature Preserve in the Town of Wales. Hikers will meet hike leader John Sly at the parking lot of Hunters Creek Park off of Centerline Road. Hikers will slosh hike to the creek bed from the Centerline Bridge to the office of the Land Conservancy at Kenneglenn Nature Preserve. This is a special, by reservation only, event. There will be frequent stops with short talks about the creek and a lunch stop at the base of Mossy Point. Bring a bag lunch and water. The creek bed may be slippery with sharp shale. Wear sturdy footwear. Sly is a Land Conservancy volunteer and long-time volunteer program leader for the Buffalo Audubon Society. Reservations are required to attend as space is limited. 20th Annual ReLeaf Conference

The 20th annual statewide ReLeaf Conference will be held at Canisius College in Buffalo. Learn about the landscape and other features of Forest Lawn in tours of the cemetery at 1411 Delaware Ave., Buffalo. A trained volunteer docent will talk about its history, art, architecture, landscape and, of course, many of Forest Lawn’s famous residents – some of whom guests will get to meet along the way! All tours take approximately two hours. Guests can choose to ride in climate-controlled comfort on the Forest Lawn trolley at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. (cost is $25) or they can walk through Forest Lawn’s beautiful grounds on the walking tours at noon and 2 p.m. ($15).  Sensible walking shoes are strongly recommended for the walking tours. The Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk is a free self-guided tour of more than 60 private gardens and carefully nurtured public spaces. Summer workshop at Linwood Gardens: Interpreting the Landscape

A workshop on interpreting the landscape will be held at Linwood Gardens, 1912 York Road, Pavilion, NY 14525. This workshop emphasizes interpreting the landscape in ways that encourage going beyond faithful description.  The leader will guide you in filling up a sketchbook in a short period of time using colored drawing media such as dry, oil or watercolor crayons and graphite sticks.  A painting is then started using the drawing as well as the location as reference. The cost is $75 per day or $60 per day if you sign up for both days. Registration deadline is Sunday, July 1.

Deadline to register for statewide 20th Annual ReLeaf Conference

The 20th annual statewide ReLeaf Conference will be held Thursday through Saturday, July 19 to 21 at Canisius College in Buffalo. Community volunteers, tree board members,  arborists, tree care workers, public and private sector foresters, landscape architects, horticulturists and government officials are all encouraged to attend. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to learn from professionals from across the country and Canada and to tour local community forestry projects, a green housing development and a tree nursery. Registration is required by July 10. The Snyder-CleveHill Garden View, now in its tenth year, is a self-supported community garden tour. All types of garden styles and plants are represented in a backdrop of architecture from 1910s to 1950s. The gardens range from newer to well-established, smaller to larger, and vegetable to perennial. Several gardens include water features and garden structures. Master Gardeners will be at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Ave., Buffalo to answer gardening questions.  Bring your soil to test! Soil testing will be done while you wait. For a small fee of $5, you may bring up to three different samples. Soil remediation strategies will be suggested based on the findings. Garden Walk visitors often miss some of the best private gardens that just happen to fall a bit farther out on the map in suburban areas. Earth Bowl Festival

The  Earth Bowl Festival will take place at the Riverside Salem United Church of Christ Environmental Cottage, 3449 West River Road, Grand Island, NY, overlooking the scenic Niagara River. Parking is available along the river. A vegetarian dinner will be served in beautifully designed, hand-thrown artisan bowls, which you can take home with you. There will be a plant sale, concert, food demos, film screenings, games and family activities. You can also visit a straw bale building, walk a labyrinth and enjoy woodland trails. The 7th annual Lewiston GardenFest will be held along historic Center Street in the Village of Lewiston. The Lewiston GardenFest is part of the Buffalo National Garden Festival. National Fairy Day workshops at Mischler’s

In celebration of National Fairy Day, Mischler’s Florist and Greenhouses will hold two  workshops at 118 South Forest Rd., Williamsville. Staff will help you design and plant a fairy garden of your own using plants, fairy garden accessories and containers available in their Garden Center.  Each workshop will last approximately two hours. The first half of each workshop will consist of an explanation and demonstration by Mischler’s creative staff. The Western New York Land Conservancy will hold a sale of native plants. An order form with available selections will be coming soon. You order in advance and pick up your plants between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Amherst, 6320 Main Street, Amherst. Native plants are those that evolved naturally for particular areas, and thus provide essential and beneficial habitat for butterflies, insects, hummingbirds and other small birds and animals we know and need. They are vigorous and hardy and, once established, require no irrigation or fertilization.Ellen Folts, owner of Amanda’s Garden, a native perennial nursery located in Springwater New York, will be available at the pick-up location Saturday morning, June 23, to answer questions. Ellen has a degree in agricultural and natural resources from SUNY Cobleskill and has worked in the horticultural field for 29+ years. Ellen is a New York State Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional.You can also visit two native plant gardens close to the pick-up location that will be open Saturday, June 23, 9am to 1pm. Wildflower hike on the Niagara Escarpment Preserve, Lockport

Join Mary AliceTock for a wildflower hike sponsored by the Western New York Land Conservancy in Eighteen Mile Creek County Park, Hamburg. Walk down into the gorge off of South Creek Road in Hamburg, which leads to the confluence of two branches of Eighteen Mile Creek and is interesting both geologically and botanically. Here hikers can find many late spring/early summer wildflowers. It’s located off of South Creek Road between Route 20 and 62. Bring a lunch & “water sneakers.” Ms. Tock has led walks in a variety of settings from the Adirondack Mountains to the streets of downtown Buffalo and for groups such as the National Wildlife Federation and the Buffalo Museum of Science. She is a past president of the Niagara Frontier Botanical Society. The Mill Road Project Spring Gala

A  fundraising event to support the Mill Road Scenic Overlook Project in East Aurora will be held at the Roycroft Power House, 39 South Grove Street,  East Aurora, NY 14052. The Friends of Mill Road is a citizens group formed to raise funds to preserve 60 acres of open space on Mill Road in East Aurora. The group has embarked on a $630,000 capital campaign to raise funds to acquire the property, construct a scenic overlook and place a conservation easement on the property to protect it so that future generations can enjoy this unique and beautiful open space. This event will include  jazz guitar music by Natural Elements Duo and a silent auction featuring items such as a fly-fishing trip, a balloon ride and a yacht tour of the Buffalo waterfront.  There will be light fare and a cash bar.  Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased online, at the Roycroft Inn in East Aurora or from committee members.

The annual Herb and Plant Sale sponsored by Friends of Kenan Herb Club will be held at the Kenan House Gardens at the Kenan Center, 433 Locust St., Lockport. There is no admission charge for this event, which coincides with 100 American Craftsmen.  An extensive variety of common and unusual herbs and other plants will be featured, along with free samplings of herbal recipes. Garden-related items will also be sold. Because some Herb Club members are Master Gardeners, you can also bring your inquiries or samples of plants you have questions about. Summer workshop at Linwood Gardens: Early birds and tree peonies

Join ornithologist Celia Lewis on a morning bird walk through the fields, woods and gardens at Linwood Gardens, 1912 York Road, Pavilion, NY 14525. Look for bobolinks in the field, wood thrushes in the woods and northern orioles among the peonies. Afterward, enjoy coffee and muffins and take a stroll through the gardens while the blossoms unfold, before the Tree Peony Festival of Flowers opens for the day. Wildflower hike on the Niagara Escarpment Preserve, Lockport

Join Jason Sorens for a walk sponsored by the Western New York Land Conservancy at the conservancy’s first protected property on the Niagara Escarpment Preserve. Bordering Leete Road in Lockport, the 36-acre property contains several unique woodland plants and ten acres of restored grassland habitat. The escarpment is a unique geological formation is often associated with unusual plants and ecological communities and is responsible for the specific weather, soil conditions, and hydrology that define Niagara County’s heritage and economy. The escarpment is responsible for the dramatic beauty of Niagara Falls, contributed to signature rises and ravines of the Underground Railroad, and enabled the intricate lock system of the Erie Canal.  Jason Sorens, a professor and amateur naturalist, landscaped his backyard with a native plants meadow (viewable on the conservancy’s Natural Gardens & Backyard Habitat Tours July 8). He volunteers with the Western New York Land Conservancy to protect native habitats for our birds, insects and wildflowers.
